Do You Know What To Do In Case Of An Accident?
Are You Prepared?
You never know when you or someone you know will be involved in an accident. Here is some helpful information to follow in case of an accident.
1 - Try to stay calm.
2 - Jot down the other vehicle's license number in case of a "hit and run".
3 - Turn off your vehicle's engine. Leave your car where it is unless it is unsafe to do so. If you feel threatened, pull the vehicle to the side of the road or to a well-lit parking lot if it is dark out. Make sure to turn on the hazard lights and set out cones, flares, or warning triangles if possible. If you are standing on or near the road, be aware of the dangers!
4 - If you feel you are injured, seek assistance immediately if necessary! If there are injuries or lots of damage call 911!
5 - Don't accept fault, even if you believe it may be your fault. You may not know all of the facts yet.
6 - Stay Calm. Be courteous and tactful to all parties.
7 - Write down where the accident occured, the time, and all witness info.
8 - Ask about injuries and get names, phone numbers, and the nature of the injury of each person.
9 - Exchange names, addresses, driver's licence numbers, and insurance info with all parties involved in the accident. Make sure you always have a current insurance ID card in your vehicle. Carry a disposable camera in your glove box and take pictures of the accident scene and damage to the vehicles.
10 - Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible and inform them of the accident.
11 - If anyone is injured, or your vehicle had to be towed from the scene, or if the damage to one person's vehicle or property exceeds $1500.00, you are required to fill out, sign, and mail the State Accident Report form to Salem. Any Fix Auto Collision Center will be able to provide you with this form.
